Great Dog Training Advice
What Would Jeff Do?dog Training Tip of the Day #118

Please stop training your dog to be leash reactive. What you where told is wrong, what you read is wrong, and what you are doing is wrong. You are actually training your dog to be leash reactive.

Lets first keep in mind that we use food for training.
Lets keep in mind we use a TON of positive reinforcement to train behaviors that we want and we want to increase more of.
Lets also keep in mind we are experts on stopping leash reactivity and it usually does not take more than a few minutes with 9 out of 10 dogs, once you understand how to do it.

What we are seeing everyday on the streets with folks and their dogs that are being leash reactive and they are applying "postive reinforcement" to either stop the behavior, redirect the behavior or to associate the other people and dogs with something good", the thing is that it does not work, it won't work, that is not what "positive reinforcement" does.

What you are doing is reinforcing a certain behavior, and when the dog is being leash reactive, that is what you are reinforcing, that is what you are telling the dog to keep doing more of.

What you do not do is apply a reward at the time the dog is doing unwanted behavior or "thinking" of doing an unwanted behavior or else you will just be reinforcing the unwanted behavior. So you need to be aware of 2 things, the physical action of the behavior and the mental thought process of the dog at the moment of the reward.

So learn how to properly punish the unwanted behaviors and THEN you can do the positive stuff.

Whenever I write about this, people then love to come out of the woodwork saying you should NEVER punish leash reactivity..lol....okay..so the only other option is to reward it...you only have 2 choices when it comes to dog trainig, reward and punishment, nothing else and nothing more, so if you don't say NO you are saying YES.

Punishing a behavior does not make it worse, does not ruin the dog, does not ruin the relationship with you and the dog. Those are just a bunch of lies that keep getting repeated over and over again.

Also you can start just using common sense, as becoming more and more common actually as people are realizing that
